Illustration Book
Wash Wash Wash!

Wash Wash Wash is an illustrated book for children in Nepal. The book tells about the importance of hand washing, and shows in detail the steps of hand washing.

 Project  : Illustration Book

Client  : REACH for Nepal Foundation

Role     : Character creation & Illustration

CLIENT

REACH for Nepal is a not-for profit foundation that was established after the 2015 earthquakes. The objectives of the foundation are: Rebuild, Educate, Assist, Children/Communities (providing) Hope for Nepal. The REACH for Nepal foundation organises trips to Nepal where clients help rebuild school classrooms and facilities and, provide additional support here required.

Background

In 2018 UC collaborated with the foundation and ran the first academic trip to Nepal. UC students visited a school and taught them the importance of hand washing and nutrition. The foundation has asked us to develop resources so they can extent the UC program into their own public trips.

Challenges

The goal of the illustrated book is simple: make Nepalese children aware of the importance of handwashing, and teach them the correct steps to wash their hands. The challenge is that the audience is Nepalese children. No one in our production team has actually been Nepal, and we are puzzled by Nepalese customs. I am worried that the elements in the illustrated book are different from local traditions. Another challenge is that the team members are all exposed to illustration for the first time. We need to adapt to new tools and learn about illustration. So our work progress may be plodding.

Aim & Requirements

The illustrated book will help improve the hand hygiene of Nepalese children and reduce the risk of related health problems.

  • Develop a children’s storybook on the importance of handwashing.

  • 2-3 pages summarize of the health conditions, hygiene problems, and habits of Nepalese children.

  • The illustrated book will be for children from kindergarten to year 4 or 5

  • The illustrated book needs to contain detailed and correct handwashing steps

Process

I am mainly responsible for character creation and illustration, and I also participated in a small part of background production. Images below are the sources of inspiration and sketches for my character creation.

The protagonists of the story are a girl named Riya and a boy named Bikash, so I checked some pictures of Nepalese children for inspiration and reference.

Results & Experiences

The client is satisfied with this illustration book. And hopefully to publish this book, so we'll make some changes and adjustments. I'm glad I was able to create it with a group of great teammates and finish it within the allotted time.

Some of the experiences in this illustrated book are:

  • Illustration techniques & software applications. This illustrator book allowed me to discover several tools that had not been used before in Illustrator, and they were all very convenient, and I can now use them very skillfully.

  • Communication skills. Communication is essential in teamwork, and we should pay attention to ways and means, especially with clients. Because they may not understand some technical terms, or they may not be able to imagine the picture we describe. So there needs to be a more intuitive way to show them concepts, such as mood boards or sketches.
